ARMCLANG: ARM7/9 support with Arm Compiler 6 (AC6)

QUESTION

Building my STR912FAW44 (ARM9) project with Arm Compiler 6 results in a warning:

Warning:L9916W: --cpu ARM966E-S is unsupported in this version of the product

and error messages:

armclang.exe:fatal error: no target architecture given...
Error:L6411E: No compatible library exists with a definition of startup symbol __main.

CAUSE

Arm Compiler 6 does not support the ARM7- and ARM9 architectures.

See the Arm Compiler 6 supported architectures here.

RESOLUTION

Use Arm Compiler 5 with the project. This is done in the field Options for Target - Target - ARM Compiler.
