Software Components

MDK offers software components for creating applications with a framework called Run-Time Environment (RTE). These components are delivered in software packs that get installed independently from the µVision. Software packs are either supplied by Arm or third-parties.

Software Components

The picture shows software packs provided by Arm Keil. Software packs can contain device support including drivers, CMSIS libraries, and middleware components.

  • Device Family Pack (DFP): contains CMSIS system/startup, drivers, and flash algorithms for a microcontroller device family.
  • CMSIS: contains the generic CMSIS components (CORE, DSP and NN libraries, and RTOS implementation).
  • MDK-Middleware: contains the middleware libraries that are part of MDK-Professional.

To use software Components within a project:

  1. Install or update software packs that contain pre-built software components with Pack Installer .
  2. Add software components to the project using the window Manage Run-Time Environment. Added components show up in the Project window.
  3. (Optionally) Set Options for Components to specify properties.
  4. (Optionally) Select Software Packs for specific targets.

Software components have the following naming convention:
<Vendor>::<Component Class>:<Component Group>:<Sub-Group>:<Version>

  • ARM::CMSIS:DSP:1.4.1: The CMSIS-DSP Library.
  • Keil::File System:Drive:NOR:5.04.1: The NOR Flash Drive of a file system.
