ULINK: Displaying Trace Data with ULINKpro using STM32F4xx Devices

Information in this knowledgebase article applies to:

  • MDK V5.18 and earlier

QUESTION

I am trying to use ETM Instruction Trace on the STM32437I-EVAL (or STM3240G-EVAL) board. My project uses the STM32F4xx_TP.INI initialization file from the Blinky pack example project. That project displays the Trace information properly, but my application does not. In my project, the Trace Data window shows Trace Running/Processing Trace, but the Trace output is always blank - even though both projects use the same initialization file and option for target debug settings.

What could be wrong with my application?

ANSWER

Your application may be configuring pins PE2..PE6 on the device. ULINKpro uses these pins to capture the trace information for the debugger. To make this easier to diagnose in the future, use the version of the STM32F4xx_TP.INI file attached to this knowledgebase article which modifies and locks only these 5 pins.
