ARMLINK: function of option "--summary_stderr"

Information in this knowledgebase article applies to:

In the linker command line string generated by µVision (Options for Target ... -> Linker -> Linker control string) there is an option "--summary_stderr". To understand the complete link step I need to know the function of all the applied linker options, but could not find anything in the manual about "--summary_stderr". What is this option used for?

The only thing this option does is to cause the output of "--info=summarysizes", e. g.:

Program Size: Code=644 RO-data=252 RW-data=0 ZI-data=612

to appear on stderr rather than stdout. Furthermore, the option ignores any --errors option and always prints to stderr rather than redirecting to the file. This is a special requirement for µVision to parse the linker messages correctly and does not influence the generated program image.

Note that this option is enabled by default, when the toolchain is used with a KEIL license.
