LICENSE: What is the Host ID?

Information in this knowledgebase article applies to:

  • FlexNet Licenses

QUESTION

For a FlexNet license, during the Generate Licenses step, the web site displays the following message:

At least 1 host Id must be specified.

What type of information is this looking for? How do I obtain it?

ANSWER

The Host ID ((a.k.a MAC ID, a.k.a. Physical Address) for a FlexNet license is the MAC Address of the file server hosting the FlexNet tools. First retrieve the Host ID of the Server, and then request a license file for the server.

On a Windows server

  • Open a command prompt and type the following to display the MAC ID (a.k.a Physical Address) of the server's Ethernet adapter:
    ipconfig /all

  • Alternatively, from a command prompt, type:
    getmac

  • This returns the Host ID as the 12 digit hex 'Physical Address'. Remove the hyphens, '-', before entering it.

On a Windows client

  • Open a command prompt and ping the server. Note the IP address in the response
    ping {SERVERNAME}
Pinging {SERVERNAME} [1.1.1.1] with 32 bytes of data:

  • Type:
     arp -a

and look for the entry with the IP address of the server. The number next to it is the Physical address.
  • This returns the Host ID as the 12 digit hex 'Physical Address'. Remove the hyphens, '-', before entering it.

On a Linux Server

  • Open a command prompt and type
    /sbin/ifconfig eth0

  • This returns the Host ID as the 12 digit hex 'HWaddr'. Remove the colons, ':', before entering it.

After finding the Host ID, Open the Generate Licenses web page and enter this Host ID into the Server Host ID text box. Then click the Generate button to create a license.dat file. More details here.
