ULINK: USING DEBUG TRACE ON ACTEL A2F200 BOARDS

SYMPTOM

When using Serial Wire Viewer with the Actel SmartFusion A2F Evaluation board, the Trace data (PC Samples, Timestamps, Exceptions, ITM information) doesn't display.

CAUSE 1

The Core Clock setting for Debug Trace is incorrect.

RESOLUTION 1

For the Actel A2F boards, make sure the Core Clock speed (Options for Target — Debug tab — Settings button — Trace tab) is set to 98KHz (0.098000 MHz).

Note:

  • Although the true core clock for the A2F200 device is 100 MHz, the A2F200 divides the core clock by 1024 for the Serial Wire Output (SWO) pin. Because of this, you must set the Core Clock value for Debug Trace to 100 MHz / 1024 or 98 KHz. This 1024 divisor may change in future versions of the device.

CAUSE 2

Some early versions (date code 0936) of the A2F200 device did not output anything on the SWO pin.

RESOLUTION 2

This was fixed in later versions of the A2F200 silicon (date code 0952 or later). Make sure the date code on your device is 0952 or later.

With either of the above resolutions, make sure you are using MDK-ARM version 4.11 or later which has updated projects and Flash algorithms for Actel SmartFusion targets. You may download the latest MDK-ARM version here.
