Different Types of Microcontrollers

Hi
I am a little confused about different types of microcontrollers. I've heard some names like AVR,PIC Please help me to know what are the other major categories and what is the real difference between them. and one more thing under the keil logo it is written and ARM company what ARM stands for.
I use only 89c51 for my applications.
Thanks

  • AVR and PIC are brand names of products from Atmel & Microchip respectively - see their websites for details.

For a listing of loads of other microcontrollers, see the EDN Microprocessor Directory:

    http://www.edn.com/index.asp?layout=microprocessors&year=2005

(it's extensive, but I don't think it's exhaustive - especially at the low end)

"under the keil logo it is written and ARM company what ARM stands for."

What ARM actually stands for is a long story...!
Suffice it to say that ARM is a company that designs processor architectures; it doesn't actually make processors - others license ARM's technology (or "Intellectual Property") to build into their own products.

You can read about the company here:
    http://www.keil.com/pr/article/1085.htm

"ARM" is also the name that the ARM company gives to its designs - there's the ARM-7, the ARM-9, etc.

For details of ARM's designs, go to http://www.arm.com/products/
