Origins of 9-bit, "Multiprocessor" UART mode?

Nothing specifically to do with Keil - just wondering if anyone here knows:

Did the 8051 "invent" the 9-bit, "Multiprocessor", UART mode - or was it just implementing an already-established "standard" ?

(That's modes 2 & 3 of the standard 8051 UART).
