Original message was written by Mr.Jonathan Kaufmann. You can search by the C51 Toolchain under Visual Studio IDE in this forum.
Just post its URL!

Is there also a way for the ARM toolchain to be included in VS (express) IDE?
I'm not sure that the Express editions support external tool integration at all? In fact, I rather suspect that they don't - you would need a full VS for that?
Having said that, the way to integrate external tools is defined by VS rather than the external tool...
Maybe people don’t realize how nice if you development in the Visual Studio IDE. In the Visual Studio IDE you will have the Autocomplete, Enhanced Syntax Coloring , Refactor tools etc. I think it can easily raise your code ability about 20-30%, and with Mr.Jonathan Kaufmann way, you will only need U3 in the debug phase.
I think you mean productivity there?
An IDE is just a tool, so it won't affect your ability or competence.
"An IDE is just a tool, so it won't affect your ability or competence."
An IDE is just a tool - Agreed.
It won't affect your ability - Not sure about that. A screwdriver is just a tool, but getting a screw in can be tough when you don't have one of the right type/size.
It won't affect your competence - Not sure about that. Using code completion and tooltips etc can increase your knowledge of the language when you're starting out. Hopefully, with more knowledge will come competence.
For my part, I don't use IDEs much. I stick to using my good old faithful editor.
Does that mean you're not very able and/or not very competent...?
;-)
It’s just a coding ability, not others. Of course, using which development tools is almost depend on your personal habit. But we should agree with that the good tool makes life easier. The book《code complete》will give more viewpoints
"Does that mean you're not very able and/or not very competent...?"
Possibly :(
But ... My wife just says I don't like change!
My God! What are you talking
raise your code ability about 20-30%
If so it should be easy to justify spending $299.

The IDE as productivity enhancing - you must be kidding.
The statement would be true if the IDEs did not force you to use inferior components in addition to the components that attract you.
In my opinion if an IDE does not allow e.g. the editor to be replaced by CodeWright, it is useless.
in another way: I will not use the Keil IDE till it a) allow me to use MY editor b) allow me to run 47 slightly different builds from the same source c) do not regularily get out of synch with the (e.g. SILabs) chip interface
I have enhanced my productivity by throwing the IDE away and using .bat files with 3 tabs on the taskbar (editor, .bat for build and emulator).

Slickedit - Spot on :)
